Early Brass Spill/Wall Box
late 18th or early 19th century brass wall spill box. Probably Dutch, circa 1790-1820. It's hand-formed from heavy sheet brass, with concave front and hinged lid, which is also domed, and with a shaped backplate with a naive, deeply chased scene of two men in 18th century dress carrying a woman in a sedan chair. With the original triangular iron hanging ring. The lid still shows hammer marks from when it was formed, and the interior has a fine untouched patina. It measures approx. 6 3/4" wide by 5 3/4" tall. For similar examples see Figures 36-38 in Fire & Light in the home pre-1820 by John Caspall. 300.00
