Two Wistarburgh Tavern Bottles






 It’s my personal belief these bottles were made by Solomon Stanger prior to the said closing of Casper Wistars glass factory in Alloway New Jersey in 1780.  In these unsettled times in 1779 Salomon bought 200 hundred acres of land in what was to become Glassboro. In March of 1781 Solomon petitioned the court of Gloucester County to open an Inn or Tavern there. In the same year the Tavern opens, although short lived. The belief is these tavern bottles were to be used in his new tavern. These bottles were likely chosen because of the hardness and durability of the bottle glass made down at Wistarburgh. They are true survivors and significantly important bottles. The other 3 of these bottles are in private or museum hands.
