A NJ advertising stoneware rolling pin with a wood display stand. Rolling pin is 14" long with handles. The stoneware roller piece is 8" long. Roller is decorated with blue wildflower design and is stamped Compliments of J. Howard Crane W. High Street Clayton, NJ. J. Howard Crane was born in1873/74 in Clayton NJ where he lived his whole life. J Howard Crane came from a family of glass worker. He is listed in the 1900 Federal Census as a glass blower. In 1910 he was listed as a glass blower. By 1920 he was listed as a Grocer. 1930's Censusensud shows him as a truck farmer at W. High Street Clayton. In 1934 he was appointed Clayton Postmaster. His father was a farmer and J Howard apparently took over the farm. This rolling pin is from the 1920's during his time as a Grocer. He was interred at Cedar Green Cemetery Clayton sept. 7 1941. During his glass blowing period, Moore Brothers in Clayton was the largest glass blowing facility in the country. Glass blowing became obsolete after the development of the automatic bottle machine at Whitney Glass Works in 1903 which helps to explain his changes in occupation. An interesting piece of South Jersey history with crossover appeal in advertising, glass and Claton NJ memorabilia.
