Hard to find New Jersey Hound handled pitcher circa 1850s. During the mid 19th century the hound handled pitchers with a hunting scene were very popular.The design originated in England but made here in America by several potters with various minor changes. This large presentation pitcher is about 10 inches tall with the name of Daniel Cox applied to the front. What makes this piece a bit odd is that it appears to made of red earthenware clay as opposed to yellow ware or stoneware.The glaze looks like a lead glaze with streaks of manganese odd but not unheard of though and the potter certainly had access to all types of clay.Attributed to the Cadmus Congress Pottery in South Amboy. Overall wonderful condition except for a short hairline on the rim not bad for a pitcher of this size when filled with liquid it must have been a bit heavy!
